Membership in the San Diego Appellate Inn is restricted to candidates who have demonstrated an interest and commitment to appellate practice. The application period runs from April 1, 2024 to June 30, 2024.

There are three classifications of members in the San Diego Appellate Inn of Court, as defined below:

MASTERS OF THE BENCH

Membership as a Master is by invitation only, and may be held by judges, lawyers, and legal educators who preferably have at least 15 years of relevant practice experience.

Masters should have demonstrated superior character, ability, and competence as advocates, particularly in the field of appellate law. Retention of status as a Master is contingent upon reasonable participation in the Inn’s activities, periodically reviewed by the Executive Committee. Masters may serve indefinitely but must serve continuously for at least five years before being eligible for election to emeritus status. Any Master granted emeritus status may be invited to serve again in an active capacity

BARRISTERS

Membership as a Barrister is subject to submission of an application and review and approval by the Executive Committee. Barristers may be attorneys who have at least 10 years of relevant practice experience but do not yet qualify as Masters. Barristers must demonstrate good character and a desire to improve and refine their skills as advocates. Membership as a Barrister shall be for two years. ASSOCIATES

Membership as an Associate is also subject to submission of an application and review and approval by the Executive Committee. Associates may be lawyers who have less than 10 years of relevant practice experience, but who do not yet meet the American Inns of Court’s minimum experience requirement for Barristers.
